Potato production

106.6 million hundredweight

2019

4.0% increase

(year-over-year change)

Potato production increased 4.0% from 2018 to 106.6 million hundredweight in 2019, returning to values similar to those observed in 2017. Total potato production was led by Prince Edward Island (23.6%), Alberta (20.4%) and Manitoba (18.5%).

Farmers in Prince Edward Island were able to harvest the vast majority (98.3%) of their seeded area, allowing their production to increase 11.5% to 25.2 million hundredweight in 2019. Heavy rains in Manitoba led to a delayed harvest that was followed by an early snowfall, resulting in large areas of abandonment. Production therefore decreased in Manitoba with 18.6% of their seeded area not harvested.

Seeded area increased 3.8% from 2018 to 361,554 acres in 2019, the result of an increase in demand for processing potatoes required by the expansion and development of Canadian processing plants.

Nationally, the average yield edged up to 312.3 hundredweight per acre in 2019. Alberta continued to report the highest average yield of 382.0 hundredweight per acre, followed by Manitoba with 345.6 hundredweight per acre.
